A Winter Wonderland

Daddio went winter camping with the Corn Desert Hiking group at Kickapoo Park this weekend. We had a huge fire and many funny stories. Many were drinking but daddio kept his vows and was the designated camper, i.e., I kept a very careful eye on the fire and those who ventured near it.I met many new nice people ; folks who like backcamping and hiking. I'm planning a three to four day backpacking trip in the Shawnee in March with the group. They eat great food by the way.

I'm finishing "The What is the What"(great book Colin!), and will be tearing into " Homage".

  1. Dad,
That trip sounds pretty great, who are these fellow campers?
Glad you like the Eggers book, hope that Orwell is equally interesting.

  2. I have not been able to get at the library, she ordered it but so far no book.I tried to get the other Eggers book, not there, I tried to get the newest Ann Tyler book Jeff suggested, not here yet. I have 2 books and will have to read today because I couldn't work at the hospital because of the road conditions. Hope all is well. Your camping trips sound very good. I just wish I was as young as you and could go also. LOVE Mom Barb P.

  4. Received my copy of "Homage to Catalonia". Looks to me as if my boys are trying to smarten up their mother to politics. Will read today, on their other hand, socialism? is it really about the pros and cons. LOL (Yes Rondell LOL, younger ones told me that means "Lots of Love" and you are included in that even though I don't know who you are..grandma Barb.

  5. Mom,

I read "Homage" my first year in college in a humanities course. I haven't read it since, but, I'll be tearing in to it this weekend. It wasn't the politics of the book that spoke to me back then; it was the way Orwell so carefully portrayed the characters. If you haven't read it for awhile, I strongly recommend "The Red Badge of Courage". I re-read it lately and I saw a lot of things in the book I didn't see when I read it many years ago in high school. It really is remarkable how as we age we see a book differently than we did earlier. I know I have noticed that lately in reading books, e.g, "Great Expectations.

    Love You,

    John
